NUM-DATA

Developing data sharing, accessibility and data exploitation “services” for temperate and tropical forest socio-ecosystems

Coordinating Institution: CIRAD Partner Institutions: CIRAD, INRAE, AgroParisTech, IRD. Project Leaders: Sophie Fortuno (CIRAD) & Christian Pichot (INRAE) Project Duration: 6 years Budget: €1 million

As part of the open science initiative, Targeted Project (PC) 5 NUM-DATA provides scientific digital support to other targeted projects as well as to future projects awarded through calls for proposals (AAP). This support aims to improve practices in managing and leveraging scientific data and codes, enhancing their value, accelerating their use, and contributing to national digital commons. NUM-DATA’s activities involve interactions with these projects, as well as with upstream or downstream partners offering digital services that NUM-DATA will either use or enrich to meet project needs.

NUM-DATA is organised into five Work Packages (WPs).

WP1: Governance, Coordination, and Dissemination

WP1 focuses on project governance and coordination (Task 1.1) as well as knowledge sharing and outreach through communication and activities within FORESTT (Task 1.2) and beyond (Task 1.3). It oversees overall interaction with other PCs, supports them in developing their Data Management Plans (DMP), and fosters digital literacy within the PEPR communities.

WP2: Support for Project Activities: FAIR Data and Services

The objective of WP2 is to enhance data and code management practices based on an analysis of current practices. This includes an inventory of the digital assets mobilised/created within FORESTT (Task 2.1), identifying services to improve the FAIRness of these assets (Task 2.2), and producing recommendations for the FORESTT community (Task 2.3).

WP3: Federating Digital Tools for Data Sharing in FORESTT

WP3 focuses on mobilising resources and implementing unifying tools to produce interoperable data. This involves first identifying and consolidating reference vocabularies for the FORESTT communities (Task 3.1). WP3 also identifies data and code repositories suitable for hosting FORESTT’s digital assets, with descriptive metadata to be federated into a FORESTT knowledge-sharing portal (Task 3.2). Lastly, WP3 supports data producers in creating new databases where explicit cross-cutting interest exists and in achieving interoperability of datasets using generic semantic annotation tools (Task 3.3).

WP4: Resources for In-Depth Data Analysis

WP4 focuses on new digital tools and methods for data analysis. This includes virtual research environments (VRE) offering cloud-based functionalities for accessing, understanding, and exploiting data (Task 4.1). The VREs deployed for FORESTT projects will rely on services provided by the Equipex+ GAIA DATA platform. Additionally, WP4 promotes AI-based approaches by establishing a FORESTT interest group that interacts with institutional actors and expert networks in these technologies.

WP5: Contributions to (Inter)National Digital Resources (FAIR)

WP5 addresses the sharing and enhancement of FORESTT’s digital outputs—data and codes—beyond the PEPR’s scope, thereby contributing to digital commons. The FORESTT portal will feed into the national metadata portal, DATA Terra, which aims to cover all Earth System data. The datasets themselves will be deposited in certified national or international repositories, such as Recherche Data Gouv (RDG).
